PLYMOUTH, MA – Eager to protect what appears to be the second highest level of recruitment ever recorded in the Elephant Trunk area, the New England Fishery Management Council has asked the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for emergency action to close the area as soon as possible.
During its Sept. 25-27 meeting here, the council voted to submit this request based on recommendations from both its scallop advisory panel and scallop oversight committee.
Scallop committee Chairman Mary Beth Tooley of Maine said, “This is a conservation request so we can husband the recruitment in there. The industry recommendation is very helpful for the resource.”
