Any small business could learn a thing or two from Cape Fishermen’s Supply in Chatham, MA.  For instance …

1. Work hard; be honest; have fun. Cape Fish has been doing just that for 40 years, since original owner Billy Nichols and his wife Nancy opened the shop in 1976.  Billy brought a commercial fishing background to the business, as did Bob Denn, who was on hand for the initial stocking of the shelves and went on to manage the store for Nancy after Billy’s death in 1978.  Bob and his wife Rosemarie eventually bought Cape Fishermen’s Supply in 1992.

The business was in sync with the area’s fisheries: the evolution from tub trawling to gillnetting in the 1970s; the late 70s scallop boom (“When the guys from Maine came down to show these fellas how it was done,” says Denn); the Scottish seining years; lobstering; you name it … right up to and including the escalation of aquaculture operations in the last few years…
